What do we mean by public interest news?

By ‘public interest news’, we mean information that is produced and disseminated to the public according to high standards of ethical conduct and best practice in journalism and which provides one or more of the following benefits to the public:

    • informs members of the public about matters of relevance to their role and responsibilities as citizens or

    • enables members of local communities to become aware of and understand matters of common concern to them as members of their community and which promotes their involvement and cooperation in such matters and community cohesion accordingly or

    • enables members of the public to participate in an informed manner in relevant democratic processes and, as a result, supports the legitimacy of the democratic process as a whole or

    • benefits the public by promoting charitable educational outcomes, such as improving public understanding of health and medical matters or the conservation of the environment.

What do we mean by independent community publisher?

Please refer to ICNN’s criteria for membership for a definition of independent community publishers:

  • Publications with an annual turnover of over £1m are not eligible to apply.

  • Funding is for publishing organisations and not individual journalists or freelancers.

  • Funding is aimed at publishers, not publications. Therefore we are only able to accept one application per publisher.

  • Funding can be used for anything that is realistically necessary for the purposes of increasing the production of public interest journalism.

  • Successful applicants must agree to provide Ping News CIC with bank details for the purposes of awarding the funding.

  • Successful applicants must commit to delivering monthly project reports highlighting the ‘impact’ the funding has had on their organisation. Templates will be provided by the Ping! Team. This includes but is not limited to providing data on individual stories produced with the help of the funding, URLs, page views, and social media shares.

  • Successful applicants must agree to be interviewed at the end of the project for the purposes of the evaluation. These interviews may be used in future case studies and/or research projects.

  • We are hoping to notify successful applicants within 30 days of receipt of applications. If this changes significantly, we will endeavour to notify all applicants as soon as possible.

  • We require that applicants do not submit any Business Sensitive Information. Business Sensitive Information is confidential information which, if disclosed, would provide your competitors with a competitive advantage over you or would otherwise cause substantial harm to you.

  • Applicants must come from individual organisations. We will not accept applications that are a collaboration between two or more separate organisations.

  • The completion of this application in no way guarantees your success in receiving funding.
