grant funding
Empowering independent journalism through strategic funding
At Ping News, we are dedicated to supporting new and existing independent news organisations with essential financial support.
Our grant funding services include the administration of specialised journalism grants like the Welsh Public Interest Journalism Fund and the Welsh Public Interest News Accelerator.
These initiatives provide crucial resources to local journalists, enabling them to cover more community stories, enhance public engagement, and hold power to account.
Achievements
Community Benefits: Our funding has enabled extensive reporting on local issues, such as council meetings, court cases, and community events. This increased coverage has led to greater public awareness and engagement, fostering informed communities.
Sustainability: Grants have allowed news organisations to hire full-time reporters, invest in new technology, and explore innovative revenue models. For example, beneficiaries have used the funding to extend contracts for journalists, create video content, and enhance local news coverage. And emergency funding has enabled independent news publications (quite often run by individuals) to successfully tackle complex technical issues.
Underrepresented communities: By facilitating training, offering seed funding, and providing access to innovative tools, our grants have helped create new independent news outlets dedicated to representing and covering underserved communities, including Black and ethnic minorities.
Success Stories: With our support, publications have produced in-depth investigations and multimedia content, covering topics like public health, local government decisions, and environmental issues. This has helped shine a light on critical matters and hold power to account, ensuring that important local stories reach a wider audience.
